Roaming Profiles with Win 7 and No Domain Controller RRS feed

  • Question

  • I hesitate to ask this question because I think I know the answer ... but ... Can I have roaming profiles without having a domain server? I have 3 WIN 7 PROF machines and 1 2003 Home Server machine and would like to sync profile info across the machines. Any way to do this without setting up a DC?

If not, any way to do this with the machines / OS's I have?

Any body knows if I can run server 2008 and Home Server as a virtual server, etc.?

Many thanks to all the great contributions I've found here at TechNet. Cheers!

  • Hello Don,

How do you use a local user account on other computers? A roaming user profile must first be set up on the domain controller. We have to create a domain user account and configure it to use Roaming User Profiles.

You can try to use Windows Live Sync to sync your profiles:

We can install server 2008 and Home Server on a Virtual PC and build this virtual PC as a domain server.
