DPM 2016 - Backup to Tape Option (Single Drive) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm currently using DPM2016 to backup our 18 Exchange 2013 Mailbox databases in a single protection group utilising short-term using disk. We have a 90 day retention period (12 hour sync) but would like to add in a weekly tape backup of all the databases.

To minimise cost, I'm thinking of adding a single SAS-attached Dell PV LTO7 tape drive to the DPM server and modifying the existing protection group to include this.

Is this a supported strategy? I've read elsewhere on this forum that we'd need two tape drives - but that seems overkill to me. Have I misunderstood?

Thanks for any assistance anyone can give me. If it helps, we're running DPM 2016 version 5.0.361.0.

  • Hello Steve,

Were you thinking of backing up long-term backups to the tape drive?

    Please note the following:

Issue: DPM doesn't support short-term backup (incremental backup) to tape for workload data (Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint, Hyper-V). Only file data (volumes, shares, folders) can be backed up incrementally.

Workaround: Use disk or a combination of disk and cloud storage (Azure Backup) for short-term backup of these workloads

Issue: DPM doesn't support multiple long-term backup goals if you only have a single tape drive.

Workaround: Add a second tape drive to DPM or to the tape library.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Leon,

    Thanks for your prompt response!

It literally would be a case of continuing to use disk for the short term backup and introduce a weekly tape backup for a long term (probably off site) storage. This would be our only long term goal as this environment is used predominantly for the backup of our Exchange environment.

On this basis, do you feel it would be a feasible plan?

    Thanks again,

  • Yes, if this is your only long-term protection goal, then this should be possible to accomplish.
