APP-V Office 2010 Shortcuts appearing for all users - package not even enabled! RRS feed

  • Question

  • We had office 2010 setup as an app-v package for a while for testing purposes and only published to a few select users. We have since disabled and deleted the package from our APP-V server and deployed office via SCCM to clients (not packaged via appv); however, now what appears to be randomly, we are seeing shortcuts under users' start menus that point to an app-v package of office 2010. The path of where the shortcuts reside is as following:

    "C:\users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\StartMenu\Programs\Microsoft Office 2010"

    We do NOT use roaming profiles in our domain environment and have not pushed any shortcuts for this application via gpo or other means.

    What could be causing this???

  • Hello,

    have you investigated the log-files of the SCCM-client?

  • In SCCM, the distribution point is set to NOT stream APP-V applications, and the advertised programs client agent is set to NOT allow app-v package advertisements.

    On one of the effected machines I see the following:

    VirtualApp.log

    Could not open the registry key SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\Client\Configuration. (0x80070002)    VAppRegistration    1/27/2010 10:32:51 AM    932 (0x03A4)
    The VirtAppMgmt client was not found on this system or is an unsupported version.    VAppRegistration    1/27/2010 10:32:51 AM    932 (0x03A4)
    CVAppRegistration::ConfigureVappClient() failed. (0x80008281)    VAppRegistration    1/27/2010 10:32:51 AM    932 (0x03A4)

    Other than that, there is nothing that appears out of the ordinary. I do not see any references to virtual applications in any of the other logs. I checked references to "office" in the logs and everything refers to my Office 2010 deployment through SCCM. I checked my package for that deployment and there is no references to anything virtual related...

    Is there some log in particular and/or phrasing that I should be looking for?

  • I found in the app-v client log that there is suddenly a reference to the office 2010 package on 7/7/2011 - nothing on days leading up to it.

    As state before, all office 2010 virtual applications have been removed from the APP-V server

    Below is from the sftlog.txt file on the offending client machine:

  • Hello,

    Not really sure about the process of how or in what order you removed things, but essentially I assume this is a way that would work;

    1. Remove advertisement for Office 2010-package

    2. Await until its removed from all clients

    3. Trigger uninstall of client

    4. Uncheck App-V handling by SCCM client

    5. Uncheck APp-v streaming from distribution points

    Not really sure if thats exactly applicable to your scenario - as I haven't really understood if you use ever / never used an App-V Management Server, if you used SCCM or not to distribute Office 2010 with a virtual a package.

  • Those settings have always been unchecked. The App-V Management server was used before but only to allow access to office 2010 to 3 people (non of which are experiencing the above problem).

    The users that have the shortcuts on their start menu for the virtual office 2010 have NEVER had access to the office 2010 virtual application.

  • hello,

    Perhaps a more detailed explanation of how you have configured the client, how you have now, previously and attempt to provision the applications in the future would give us a better understanding of the problem.

  • Hopefully this provides more insight...

    Past:

    We previously packaged office 2010 for APP-V for testing purposes only. There were a few select users that needed access to office 2010 and we were not ready to deploy a full software package to any client machines yet. Because of this, we followed the recommended procedures for capturing an APP-V virtual package of office 2010 and granted access to these users through Active Directory group permissions. Our APP-V client is configured to connect to our application virtualization server on port 554 and refresh on login - which has worked well in the past.

    As mentioned, the office 2010 virtual package was only deployed to about 3 people via the APP-V 4.6 client. We noticed no problems with this deployment and did not notice any strange behavior for the few months that we had it running this way.

    Present:

    We then decided that we were going to go the route of an actual software deployment, NOT a virtual deployment, so we disabled the virtual packaged on the APP-V management server and removed any users' access from the AD group tied to this package. 2 weeks ago we began deploying Microsoft Office 2010 through Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager as an actual software installation, NOT a virtual application package. We configured the setup.exe customization tool to fit our needs, tested in our lab environment and then began to push this advertisement via SCCM to client machines across our domain.

    Around this same time we began to receive calls from end users saying that they could not open office applications. Upon investigation, we noticed that some users had a folder on their start menu labeled "Microsoft Office" which contained the installed office 2010 suite, as well as a folder labeled "Microsoft Office 2010" which contained shortcuts to a virtualized office suite from the APP-V client. When the user would click on these shortcuts, the app-v client would launch and then present the user with message saying that it could not open the requested application.

    The users that had these shortcuts were NEVER in the AD group that originally had permissions to the virtual office 2010 package, which is what is so confusing!

    Why are these shortcuts being deployed to end users that never had, and currently still do not have access to app-v packages? Why is the app-v client publishing shortcuts at all for an application that has been disabled in the APP-V management console??

  • Hello,

    I would reverify if those users have receive the shortcuts by other means than App-V, if they have not received them by other means its a very simple process to verify to whom you have distributed the package to either by;

    Checking the package within the past-infrastructure and who currently has access to it.
    or

    Verify SCCM and check that you have not distributed a virtual application package using either the integrated virtual application package or a classic distribution using MSI with a virtual application package.

  • The cause of this problem has still not been determined.

    No virtual applications have been issued through SCCM.

    The virtual package on the APP-V server no longer exists.

    Software was only distributed through these two manners - no other method was used.

  • This is an interesting one. On a machine experiencing this issue, lets query the Applications published ot the client via WMI to see if it is still registered.

    Run this command from an elevated command prompt

    WMIC /NAMESPACE:\\root\Microsoft\appvirt\client PATH Application

    Match that response (if you get one) with what is listed under applications in the App-V client console.

    If both reveal no application information then it looks like some residual published assets were never properly cleaned up.

    Were you switching back and forth when testing between App-V Management servers and SCCM integration?
