Rename Domain Controller and Change IP Address

    Question

  • Hi All,

We have a windows 2008 R2 server which hosting DC, AD, DNS and FRS/DFS Member and there's a plan to relocate to other site. The site is new so will have new range of IP and requires all relocating server to be renamed.

Just wondering what's the best approach and tested to do the task, although I have some steps in mind but I like to see what others think.

    - No changes on server before relocating
    - Once server is onsite do the following

    1. Create new ADSS Subnet/Sites/Link

    2. Change the IP Address
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794931(v=ws.10).aspx

    3. Rename the server using netdom
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc816601(v=ws.10).aspx

    4. Manually update the FRS/DFS Member of object

    Appreciate for any feedback

    Thanks,
    Art

  • Hello.

There are different ways you can do this task. Since it's just a member, personally I would:

    Remove DFS target membership

    Demote Server ADDS

Move to new site/ change IP / Change Name

    Promote Server ADDS

Add DFSR target and replicate data again

Of course this assumes the DFSR folders are not excessively large and this is not the PDC.

Your plan seems to OK also, just make sure dns records will be changed after rename host and change ip of DC.Also just take a backup before process.

  • Thanks everyone.

I was told, demote is the best to go but I still like to see everyone opinion on my planned approach.

  • Hi Miguel,

How do you accomplish the "Remove DFS target memberships"? The server is the local DC of the site but the data is on other local file server. Data are not replicated.

  • Hi Karim,

No its not, this is for renaming the domain name. My help needed is to rename only the hostname of one of the DC.

  • Hi Burak,

When I performed the netdom, does DNS record will automatically change right?

When change ip and hostname, then you should run "ipconfig /flushdns" and "ipconfig /registerdns"...Also for make sure just check from dns;records updates correctly.
