Early Stage Milestones - Best Practice RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it best practice to create custom date fields at project level to track early stage events in the project (or to hold high level milestones that eg Finance enter and use) or do people recommend that All milestones should appear in the full plan?   If so how do Non project savy people (eg Finance) best enter this info without opening up the the plan in the web browser or project professional?

If the former approach is used ie early stage milestones created at project level and follow on stage milestones created within the project schedule can that information be brought together in Excel Services reports as a single list of all milestones for the project?

    thanks

  • Stev, of course practices vary between organisations. One principle that makes life easier is to have a single, coherent project management philosophy and set of tools. In your case, this would mean including Finance milestones in the same planning environment as the other milestones. There are a couple of features of MS Project that make this easier - for instance being able to baseline just selected tasks - if it is necessary to track early stage milestones before the full plan is approved for baselining. Another feature is the use of custom fields as flags so that you can set up views with filters that will ensure people see only their own relevant - and relevantly formatted - data.

You mention non project savvy people needing to view the information. Are they sufficiently savvy to use a browser so they could see a view in PWA? Do you need to export the view data to Excel so you can post it on a SharePoint site?
