Short duration tasks impacting levelling RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there a way to include occasional tasks in a project but not have them over commit a resource?

For example if you were making packet soup, you stir it constantly until it comes to the boil then simmer and stir occasionally.

While you're stirring occasionally, you can cut bread, lay the table, heat the bowls etc.

All those other tasks are full time while you're completing them but you'd like to include the requirement to stir occasionally as a task in the project plan.  However, that will over commit the resource.  Is there an elegant way of avoiding this issue?

There is no automatic way to accomplish what you seek.  Using the built-in leveling tool is no help, as it will either split tasks or delay tasks.  I'm not sure either of those options will meet your requirements.

What you can do, however, is to manually contour the Work hours for the parallel tasks to eliminate the overallocations.  Truth be known, it would be much simpler to live with small overallocations in your project, which would eventually be resolved when you enter progress against tasks with overallocated resources assigned.  Just my opinion.  Let's see what the others in this forum suggest for you.  Hope this helps.
