DPM 2016 able to define which parts of a single protection group to tape backup? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We currently have DPM 2012 and a large protection group with 30 day hard drive retention.. quarterly i send the data to tape (dlt-s4 quantum superloader 3).. which takes up about 10-11 tapes for 12TB of data..

As far as I know there is no way to define which data to send to tape.. its either all or nothing..

(unless there is some trick with DPM 2012 to do this?)

Does anyone know of a 2012 trick, or if 2016 now supports this?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi,

That is the purpose of protection groups.  They allow you to place protected data sources in a group that share the same protection goals.  If you only want a sub-set of the data sources to be sent to tape quarterly - then move them into a different protection group.

Moving them to a different group, requires a duplicate effort on that group being stored on the hard drive for 30 day retention..

If goal one, is ALL data retained 30 days on the hard drive and goal two is tape retention for only say 75% of this, how do you achieve it using One Protection group.. or for that matter, two protection groups, one that covers 100% hard drive and the other just 75% tape?

  • Hi,

As noted earlier, you will need two protections groups.

PG1)  Only contains the data sources that you want both disk and tape protection.  Remove all other data sources and when removing them, retain the replica disk.  Those removed data sources will go into Inactive Protection.

PG2) Create a new protection group and add the data sources that you want only disk based recovery points for.  The data sources will then be removed from Inactive Protection.

Only data sources that are co-located (SQL DB's, Hyper-V VM's and Client desktop) on disk "may" require a new replica to be created.  The conditions that effect that are detailed in the following TechNet article.

Moving Between Co-Located and Non-Co-Located Protection Groups

If none of your data sources are using disk co-location, then when you re-protect them in a the new PG they will use the original replica and not require or use additional DPM storage pool space.
