  • Question

  • When you run the virtualization proposal report it produces the Server Consolidation Report.xls. Does the MAP tool logically place the VM candidates by CPU and memory under specific hosts? But more importantly does it take into consideration the VM candidates that run Exchange, SQL, and Domain Controllers and place them on specific hosts?  Or is the results purely based on the performance metrics regarding the Host to VM placement in the report?

  • It won't be in 5.0, but that kind of thing is on the list for a future version.

  • Only utilizations are taken into account when placing guests on hosts.  There's no intelligence about workloads, so you'll need to check to make sure that best practices are taken into account when doing the actual distributions of guests across host machines.

The MAP tool doesn't understand rules like "don't put two domain controllers on the same physical host".

  • Thanks for the info Jay!!

Will the new version MAP 5.0 have this type of logic built-in the tool? If not that would be a good enhancement request for a future version  ;)
