WSUS Server Not Synchronizing RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a WSUS server running WSUS 3.0 SP2. We had space issues with the WSUScontent folder taking up over 200 GB. We wound up stopping IIS, then clearing out the WSUScontent folder manually and restarting IIS. Then, we ran wsusutil.exe with the command "reset" in order to get is started with downloading updates again. We now have a completely different issue, since we have tons of disk space but the server won't synchronize and download updates. The WSUS console will freeze after a couple minutes and give the following message, stating that an error occurred trying to connect to the WSUS server:

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists, Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\. We've cleared out the WSUS file in c:\users\user\appdata\roaming\Microsoft\MMC, and still no luck. So, the main issue now is how to get WSUS communicating again. It seems like IIS might be an issue, since it won't stop IIS when using the console. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi Sean-Maxim,

Is the WSUS server new installed? If yes, I would suggest you reinstall the WSUS directly. Sometimes, it may be easier than troubleshoot the original one if the WSUS server haven't been put into use.

When you reinstall, only choose needed products and classifications, and it's not recommended to choose "Drivers" when sync. When sync, WSUS server only download metadata of the update into SUSDB, when the update is approved, the update file will be download into WSUS content folder.

Welcome to feed back your thoughts if you have any concerns.

    Best Regards,
