Windows XP Shutdown default option RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

we have several Windows XP computers that show a strange behaviour and different to the other clients with same OS image:

When selecting Start -> Shutdown the default option is usually set to the action performed last time. If the user turned off the PC, the next time it will suggest "Turn off" as well.

But the mentioned clients always show "Restart". The user has then manually switch to "Turn off" - and next time the default is "Restart" as well.

As users generally klick Start -> Shutdown and press Enter to confirm the default, this causes the computers to run all night. Can anyone provide me with a way to check the cause of this? As it does not seem possible to determine a default action my guess is, that windows does not save the last used state correctly.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Try creating a new user profile and test from that one.  Also you can try looking into the registry. Try to come up with a meaningfull search string like "restart" and see which keys are assigned to it.

Group policy and local security policy might help too. Get a registry monitor tool, or regmon from sysnternals.
