Switching to DPM 2010 .. Bridgestor? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are in the process of purchasing a complete hardware/software replacement for our exisitng backup solution.  We have decided on DPM 2010..  One of the real drawbacks to DPM is the lack of deduplication,  compression and encryption.   We have been entertaining a soltuion from BridgeStor that does hardware based Dedup/Compression/Encryption to disk.   Basically it presents the volume to DPM as a standard DPM volume and offloads the dedup and compression to a hardware based card in the DPM server.

Yes.. Im pretty leery at this point .. thus the question here..  the updside is pretty significant..

Anyone have any comments ?  Experience ?

  • Hi Steve

There are three different ways on making deduplication happen in DPM.

    1. Use SIS wich is Microsofts deduplication. You'll need to run a storage server to get the fuction fully working.
    2. Use BitWackr (http://www.exar.com/common/content/default.aspx?id=7454). BitWackr comes in three different "versions" look at the URL for more info
    3. Use BrigeSTORE. The advantage with bridge store is (as far as I understand) a sotragebox that makes the de-duplication works transparent to DPM on the storage boxs hardware.

I hope this could clear out som questions for you.
