best approach to set up a staging environment based on production farm? RRS feed

  • Question

  • What is the best approach to set up a staging environment based on production farm? I'd like to image the WFE prod machine since I have lots of add-on and custom code installed in Prod. It will take long time to do a clean install.

We have production farm with three WFE, one App and a SQL cluster.

We are going to set up a staging environment as much similar as possible with Prod.

    1. The staging will be in separate domain with separate AD etc.

    2. I can't move all the production content DB to staging cause the DB is huge.

  • Let me better understand what you want to do here-

    1) Setup a staging environment that is as close as possible to Prod

    2) Do this without moving prod content DBs due to size

    3) Do this without doing a clean build in staging and perhaps image the prod box somehow

    Did I get that right?

My gut reaction is that you're in for more headache if you try to do it that way. I'd recommend that you setup a new staging WFE but perhaps re-use the same SQL box so as to avoid expensive DB copies.
