Applying User specific settings and files to all new user profiles RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a handful of user profile specific files (located in  %APPDATA% and %LOCALAPPDATA%) and registry settings (HKCU) we want to ensure are applied for any new user profile on machines setup with MDT.

    For example, we have a file "config.ini" that needs to be in "%appdata%\Some Directory" for any user who logs on to a machine.

    Im familiar with the using the CopyProfile from Default Profile for accomplishing this for registry entries at least, but this requires us to create a new build image each time we need to update. Hoping there is something that can be handled as part of the Task Sequence.

    Whats the best/easiest way to accomplish this?

    Thanks!

  • Activesetup is the key.

    Long answer is something like (with some background):

    http://www.itninja.com/blog/view/appdeploy-articles-activesetup

    Basically you create a regkey like:

    [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\SomeUniqueName]
     "Version"="1,0"
     "StubPath"="Robocopy SomeLocation %Appdata% whatever.ini"

  • Sounds like you have a broken application. I would provide feedback to the developers that an INI file in the user's profile is bad, as compared to a shared space, these are bad assumptions.

    It has nothing to do with the application per se. Lets say a particular application stores its configuration file in %appdata% and we want to deploy a customized version of that configuration file for any user who logs into a particular workstation. We're looking for the best way to do that via our MDT image. Same goes for user specific registry entries for any user that logs onto a workstation.

    Looks like there's a bit to work to getting ActiveSetup configured, but we'll look into that. I'd have to assume this is a pretty common desire, so curious if perhaps Im over thinking this and there's another way to handle this.

    Thanks.

  • No Tim you are right.  It is an poor solution to the application installer handling this properly.
