How does Instant Messaging functionality work for Distribution List in SFB? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Q1) Kindly explain how does Instant Messaging functionality work for Distribution List in SFB? There is no SIP record for Distribution List, only X400 / X500 / smtp and SMTP records as email address type are showing in Exchange Admin Center. In spite of this, Instant Messaging feature works and messages delivered to all recipients in the list on SFB.

Q2) What is SIP address really? What is the actual use and purpose of SIP? How does SIP work in SFB?

Please explain and reply specific to above mentioned questions.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Gaurav

  • Hi Gaurav_1986,

<Question 1> How does Instant Messaging functionality work for Distribution List in SFB?

When you send instant messaging to Distribution List in Skype for Business, you can search the group with display name.

The workflow is like the following image.

<Question 2> What is SIP address really? What is the actual use and purpose of SIP? How does SIP work in SFB?

SIP address is used by Skype for Business to locate users and thus communicate. User Principal Name is your account’s sign in address. You use it to sign in to OWA, Outlook client etc. SMTP address is the sender address displayed at recipient side when you send emails out.

Usually, we’d better keep these three addresses same. Otherwise, unexpected errors may occur during the daily works.

  • Thanks for your reply Sharon. Here are my follow-up questions:

Q1) As per your reply on question 1, sending instant messages to Distribution List has nothing to do with SIP address. That's why there is no SIP address record defined or required for distribution list as well as sending instant messages to list occurs because of display name of distribution list. Am I right?

Q2) As per your reply on question 2, SIP address is used by Skype for Business to locate users and thus communicate. However, there is no SIP address record as email address type for Distribution List still members of the list can communicate on SFB. So does it mean that IM communication among members of distribution list happens without SIP address?

Please explain and reply specific to above mentioned questions.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Gaurav

  • Hi Gaurav_1986,

As far as I know, Instant Messaging among members of Distribution List needs SIP addresses.

The Distribution List is a group which has many members. These members have their own SIP addresses. When you send Instant Messaging to a Distribution group, it will locate the members by SIP addresses.
