Migrating shares, in-guest iSCSI connected drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a 2008 server (it's a VMWare virtual machine) with an in-guest iSCSI drive attached. (I inherited it this way and will change it as soon as I can get a good backup of it.)

This is a main file-share server, and so in Server Manager / Share and Storage Management we have thousands of shares. 99% of these are pointing to folders on the iSCSI attached drive.

I want to build a new 2016 VM and migrate the shares to that server, disconnect the iSCSI drive from the original server, attach it to the new server, and move on with life.

But I can't find any good instructions on how to do this; all the instructions involve moving the data as well, which I won't need to do...I simply need to copy all the shares and share permissions from one server to another.

    How do I do this?
