How to open 2003 mpp file with project 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    My version: Project 2010 (14.0.7011.1000) SP2 MSO (14.0.7145.5000)

I have 200 mpp files created with Project 2003. With 2000 tasks in each file. Each file starts on 1st january and finishes on 31st december.

When I open a project of year 2013 or year 2014 in Project 2010:

    • almost 50 tasks are set with a constraint Must start on march 2011
    • some other tasks are set with a constraint Must start on 1988

Settings all the right dates will take several weeks of work.

Is it possible to retrieve these projects with the right dates in 2010 version?

    Thanks for help.

PS: for some files a get the message: Project 2010 cannot open files created with 98 version... :-(

  • WLID1966,

First of all, your version of Project 2010 is not up to date. You have the basic SP2 installed but not updates thereafter. I suggest you do an Office update (that will automatically update Project), or download the latest public update at: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2553251

Second, if possible (but I suspect not), make sure Project 2003 is updated with SP3.

Tell us more about your old files. What exactly do you mean, "when I open a project of year 2013 or 2014"?  Do the tasks with a Must Start On constraint of March 2011 have any constraint or predecessor when viewed in Project 2003? How about the tasks with the constraint of 1988? What do you believe are the "Right dates"? Resetting the dates may or may not be as big a deal as you think.

Apparently some of your old files pre-date Project 2003. How many of those do you have? If it's not too many, I could open and update them for you, assuming they are not corrupt.

    John
