System Center 2012 R2 DPM - Long Term (tape) backup problem - Can't utilize whole tapes full capacity RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

Thanks for reading my questions. My set up is that, I am using:

    1. System Center 2012 R2 DPM

    2. Dell PowerVault 124T autoloader

    3. LTO-5 Ultrium 5 tape (1.5TB/3.0TB)

My short term backup to disc is good, but there are some problem on my long term back to tape.

I have 6 protection groups, each group contains HyperV VMs and Exchange mailbox database. I have set to compress the data at the long term backup setting, and all of protaction group long term backup retention range are same. All protection group will run the backup at fri 12pm.

The result is that all data can be saved to the tape, the only problem is , it total used up 3 tape for this operation

Tape 1 : Data size 2.60TB and mention Offisite ready

Tape 2 : Data size 0.98TB and mention Offisite ready

Tape 3 : Data size 1.08TB and mention "not" Offisite ready

Does it have a standard that how much data can be each Lto-5 tape be saved? Also , do you have any idea that why the tape sometimes use 2.60TB , sometimes use 0.98TB? Can it be improved? Let say use 2 tapes only, Tape 1 use 2.6TB and Tape 2 use 2.06TB(0.98+1.08TB)?

Thank you very much for your help / suggestions.
