MBSA Error: The catalog file is damage or an invalid catalog. RRS feed

  • Trying to perform offline scans with MBSA.  The catalog file has a valid digital signature of:

    ‎Tuesday, ‎March ‎14, ‎2017 8:54:48 AM 

    The scan fails immediately with the error: 

    "The catalog file is damage or an invalid catalog."

    Downloaded several copies and tested on multiple computers to verify the problem is with the file.

  • I had the same issue this morning. If I download from the Microsoft link ( and run MBSA offline, I get that same error. If I run MBSA through the GUI and let it download the cab (puts it in c:\users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\MBSA\Cache) and copy that file to my offline system, it works. The two files look identical, but for some reason it only works with the GUI downloaded version.

  • Sorry for the late response - but your solution with the automatic retrieval vs downloading via the 76054 link was the same solution we came up with.  We never figured out why it was different.
