EFS files and block level changes RRS feed

  • Question

  • I wanted to confirm that EFS files cannot use block level changes to transfer changed data. I ran into this when I had some users that had large PST files that were being transferred in full every day, so a 6GB file was copying in full over the wire. At first I thought it was a problem with PST files until I isolated that all these users had EFSed PST files.

So as far as I can if an EFSed file is changed in anyway the full file gets transferred rather than just the block level changes. I haven’t seen this in the documentation anywhere can someone confirm if this is expected behavior.

  • Hello Christian,

Due to the fact that the changed blocks are encrypted with EFS, DPM will transfer over the whole file. This is normal behavior.

    Thanks,

  • Can anyone at MS confirm this finding? And point to the documentation on it?
