The Marked Answer is wrong. they're not getting the problem. That functionality everyone knows about since Windows 95. The problem that needs an answer is this: Right-click on the folder name, CHANGE THE NAME, hit enter and BOOM: Rename Folder>Can't Find the Specified Folder > Make sure you specify the correct path and file name. Guess this is a bug to be fixed.
Use the command box to rename: cd to your folder/file then RENAME "filename" "changetothis"

I finally learned how to rename a folder in Windows 10: Place cursor on folder. RIGHT Click. Look at options, and you'll see (hopefully) "rename." (It's near the bottom on my display.) Then just write over the old name, as with previous versions.Wednesday, August 5, 2015 2:44 PM

Hi,
Which file or folder did you want to rename? Any error message or symptom appear when you attempt to rename it?
Meanwhile, make sure these file are not in use and you have the sufficient permission to control these files.

I am having the same issue.
Also when scrolling through picture thumbnails, it keeps resetting back to the top. This means I have to scroll back down to where I was every 3-7 seconds.
Thoughts on a fix?
Thanks,
Drake

This is a work around but not an answer to the "bug" introduced into the system. My users should not need to command line to do a simple function that is supposed to be available in explorer. I'm linking another post from this forum as it has the same profile/problem. The answer there was to "Roll Back" also just a work around to the real problem. How about a real fix as these are only "band aids".

I am coming close to removing Win10 for this reason. but with my luck this will remain if it retard to Win8.1. we know how to "right click" and choose the "rename" command from the menu. that is not the issue, the issue is the explorer window seems to refresh after a few seconds and when it does it defaults newly created folders to "New Folder" even is you are already in the middle of renaming the folder. and to a lesser degree this happens with renaming files. In addition if you have a folder with a long file list that exceeds the window frame of explorer, and are scrolling down to the bottom of the list when the window refreshes it kicks you back to the top of the file list. Frustrating when you want to open a file at the bottom of the list and you actually have to read the file names then just as you start to click on the file the screen refreshes and because you are slower than the machine you end up double clicking on a file at the top of the list that you didn't want in the first place.
please tell me there is a fix on the way

Here's how I fixed this issue in Windows 10:
- Press WinKey + R
- In the run box type "regedit"
- Navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions
From here there are 5 items that you need to delete or rename. In my case I just renamed the folders with "-BAD" after the original folder name. If you want you can also search for these strings so you don't have to manually look.
The names are:
{2112AB0A-C86A-4ffe-A368-0DE96E47012E}
{491E922F-5643-4af4-A7EB-4E7A138D8174}
{7b0db17d-9cd2-4a93-9733-46cc89022e7c}
{A302545D-DEFF-464b-ABE8-61C8648D939B}
{A990AE9F-A03B-4e80-94BC-9912D7504104}
After the rename of these folders reboot your PC and the issue should now be fixed.

After the rename of these folders the issue was instantly resolved.
I applied the above "Fix" editing the registry as indicated appending "-BAD" to 5 Keys with no cure to the issue.
It certainly seems that this is a problem with how Win10 is identifying folder locations. Obviously some location is being used to allow any number of "New Folder" to be created and files to be placed there and as a further point sub-folders may be created within the Parent "New Folder" and also cannot be renamed thus retaining the New Folder name. Odd that explorer can find and manipulate files within any of these folders but not find the folder itself to rename it both the host folder and child folders within. It seems explorer does not have access to the creation point for "New Folder" and cannot find the "New Folder" in order to rename it.
I also note here there are references to the folders listed above are also in "Data" in various "PropertyBag"s for preferred folders. These were not renamed as the instructions given did not specify that they should be, nor was any mention that they exist and/or needed to be renamed.
I ask again MS some help please. I did have a conversation with a Tech Support person. Their answer was to do a "Roll Back" to a point prior to this issue starting. Difficult for me as I didn't notice the issue right away. Why not just find the problem and issue a fix? A "Roll Back" will require me to do a lot of hoop jumping to get this system back to where it is and I shouldn't need to jump through hoops to fix a problem I did not create.
Yes for you out there I did reboot the system after the edit.

I did as what you mentioned and reboot my PC. It seems just delay a bit longer:
1. For scrolling down folder: 20+ seconds back to top (previously about 10 seconds)
2. For re-name file: less than 15 seconds then refresh and exit the re-name action (previously less than 10 seconds)
The issue is still there. Anyone can help on this?

Not only re-name. If there're a lot of folders/files and when I try to look for something that's out of the Explorer display frame, I have to race with time! because the screen will automatically back to the top of the folder around 10 seconds. That's annoying! This didn't happen in previous versions of windows (at least not for Windows 7).
I don't understand why MS change this display setting for Windows 10.

Doesn't really matter. The point of the rename is to stop Windows from referencing that folder so as long as the name is changed in any way it should work.Monday, September 14, 2015 2:08 PM
-
It depends on what you are referring to because if you're in the recovery console for example the D:\ is the drive letter used to mount your Windows installation. Usually this is C:\ but not always.Monday, September 14, 2015 2:11 PM

Now, I have still no idea what's the solution to stop the Windows Explorer refresh and back to the top automatically in a short period of time. It happens in any drive letter /folders provided you use the Windows explorer.
Is there any 3rd party software to replace the role of Windows Explorer? It has been annoying me all the time!
Monday, September 14, 2015 4:34 PM -
I have found a good 3rd party software to replace the Windows Explorer! It's called "Xplorer2" http://zabkat.com/
Xplorer2_Lite is totally free (less features than the Pro version, some languages not supported). I have tested it. It's more easy to use with many useful options.
Very important: it has no those problems as mentioned above!

I have the same problem. I think is related to the refresh rate of your wallpaper. I changed to a different theme with the default options (the other theme was a "change wallpaper every 5-10 seconds) and now I have more time to rename. I can still see the refresh happening in my toolbar (screen "flashes") and that's when the rename process starts again. Hope it helps.

Yeah great. That is a problem pointed out what is happening. But it is still no solution.
I hope MS will realease some win10 update soon which will eliminate this glitch as it is annoying.

I ran into the same problem: Screen refreshes before I finish typing the new name. I didn't rename the registry or delete them since each registry entry seems apply to one folder. I decided to play with the Themes under the Personalize of Desktop, hoping to find if there is a setting of refresh rate. I didn't find the setting but I change the Theme from Windows to Windows 10 and back to Windows. Somehow the problem WENT AWAY. The screen does not refresh any more. I waited at least for 1 min and the rename text is still on the screen. That's enough time for me to rename a file. :).

Surprising as it was to me, "I change the Theme from Windows to Windows 10 and back to Windows" worked. Having upgraded from Windows 7 Professional 64 to Windows 10, i had the same problem of folder/file re-naming timeout. Changing the Theme from Windows to Windows 10, resolved the issue.
Note: I left the Theme as Windows 10, and did not revert to Windows, so cannot vouch for this component.
To change the Theme: Right click on desktop background.. Then select Personalize>Theme>Theme settings>Select Windows 10.

If you have a slideshow theme running on the desktop that changes say every 10 seconds (setup in windows 8.1 prior to upgrading), that is all the time you get to edit file names. If you have a fixed theme or background then you have all the time in the world. Tested both theories.
Only trouble is there is not a way of changing the timing of the slideshow theme as there was in windows 8.1.
Anyone found a way of changing the slideshow timing????
This is not a satisfactory resolution but allows editing of file names for the time being.

Found it, under settings, personalisation, backgrounds, select slideshow.
Now the minimum time allowed is 1 minute, not 10 or 30 seconds as in windows 8.1.
So their answer to the problem is make the screen changes longer to allow time to edit file names, not an elegant answer, but workable,.

I have had the same problem and found a simple fix in another thread. If you are running a screen saver that has repeated pictures on it then each time the picture changes what ever you are doing changes as well. Put the screen saver to 1 picture and this may work for you. It did for me.

I have the exact same issues it very frustrating it takes 5 tries to get the new name in if I can get it to work at all and yes I know how to rename files several ways, been doing it for years.
If I have a folder of pictures and scroll down it jumps back to the top every 3 to 5 seconds.
Microsoft please fix or at least look at it as a real problem, I'm thinking of going back to windows 7.

i'm not sure of the 'timing' of your issue - does this happen EVERYTIME you open an explorer window, initially, or does this continue to happen after the explorer window has been open for a longer period (let's say, over 1 minute)
there are numerous 'switches' in Explorer, and one of them that causes a refresh is "expand to open folder" in FOLDER OPTIONS > Navigation Pane.
Also, "Open File Explorer to: Quick Access" can confuse the user with its delayed 'refresh' behavior.
play around with FOLDER OPTIONS and see if that helps
Finally, have a look at ITWORLD article regarding other EXPLORER bugs - they might give you some clues.

IRSTEVE,
Thank you for this. Yours is the only true, and permanent, solution to my folder woes.
Not so permanent is the sevenforums disaster. I say "disaster" because the sevenforums "solution" not only failed as a permanent fix on my system, it created five empty folders I cannot get rid of. Five empty icons, really, since the so-called folders have neither contents nor properties. Nightmare for us neatnicks.
Can anyone help with the empty folders/icons created by using the sevenforums fix? Please. Win 10's File Explorer is making me hate this new OS with a passion. I'm close to re-upping the image of my beautifully working Win 8.1 system.
Again, thank you, IRSTEVE. Your solution has my legitimate Win 10 folders working perfectly. And thank you, everyone. I've lurked in here for eons, and many of you have saved my bacon many a time.

Able to rename when the folder is not accessed in the Quick Access section.
I was able to right click and see the rename option when I selected the folder from another window other than Quick Access.
Try to locate the folder in the c drive or follow the path to find the folder where ever it is located. Then right click and rename the folder/file.

I have an idea since i have this problem and it doesnt look like anyone is going to fix it anytime soon. why doesn't microsoft just buy out one of these free file explorer programs, and include it with windows instead of the one they made . I had to resort to one because of this problem and it is working fineSaturday, April 23, 2016 9:29 PM

that would be fine if it actually worked mine just kept saying can not find file or folder but would let it keep the name "new folder"
Saturday, April 23, 2016 9:31 PM -
From here there are 5 items that you need to delete or rename. In my case I just renamed the folders with "-BAD" after the original folder name. If you want you can also search for these strings so you don't have to manually look.
Those keys pertain to: MusicLibrary, VideosLibrary, DocumentsLibrary, UsersLibrariesFolder, and PicturesLibrary.
So, libraries. But what's kind of strange is that the keys are NOT recreated upon reboot. Does that break libraries? If not, what is the purpose of the keys specifically? And why would those keys, which clearly pertain to libraries in some vague way, have any bearing on the issue?

7-19-2016: Windows 10 Home 64bit (solution below)
Up until recently, I have been able to slowly left click on the name portion of the folder, image, document, etc and a "rename" box appears. This is no longer the case. Now when I try to hover and click to rename, it goes directly to opening the photo, document, folder, etc. It registers the first click as a double click. I have tried changing mouse settings to slower click rates, but the problem remains [both with wired and wireless mice]
I can use F2 to rename, but this is also an added step.
When I right click on photos and go to "properties" to rename [another added step and there is a lag for rename box to pop up], the renamed text does not readily appear underneath the photo BUT is accepted if I change the folder view [where the photo is contained] to ANY other view.
There is no means in "mouse settings" to change this option back either. I do a lot of photo editing and the handiness of having a "hover and click" to rename function is a time saver.
- - -
Solution:
Go to "file explorer options" > under "click items as follows" select "double click to open an item" (single click to select)
This has restored the ability to rename a file with the click of the mouse.

The marked answers here seem all inadequate to the issue in the title as I experiment it on my W10 PC. So, this issue is not solved for my W10 PC.
Experimenting apparently the same issue on a clean W10 x64 install, I also note that, after creating a new folder, the process refused the folder name I wanted to give (so the new folder remained called "New folder"). I note that the folder's properties window shows as Attributes "Read-Only (Only applies to files in folder)", the corresponding box being fully dark (not grey or white).
In fact, not doing a lot of further checks, most folders on the W10 HDD of this PC have this attribute set at Read Only (this PC is a simple PC, just W10 on it just installed & MS Office, nothing else), which appears absurd to me.
This read only "false" attribute introduced in W10 is another bug that affects all my machines with W10 on them. It is not fixed. However, it is also quite "old".
I wonder if there is a link between this "false" "read only" attribute and this refusal to rename the folder.
I renamed the folder easily using an old "DOS" command as suggested & it worked (in command mode, go on the specific drive where you need to do this and type "ren 'old' 'new'" where 'old' is 'New folder' and 'new' is '<whatever new name you want to give>'.
I have no clue why the command mode worked and file explorer did not work.
I am used to buggy programming but some basic testing & quality checks seem seriously missing @Microsoft.
As noted by others in this forum, such issues makes Windows 10 barely workable, so I suspect MS will come with fixes. It is Sunday, I can loose time at home, but what in professional life? Impossible, I would have to roll back to W7 immediately.
These serious issues are not new. So, it comes to me as a surprise that they have not been fixed much earlier.
I may investigate the possibility to use another file explorer as the one mentioned below. However, the proposed solution below does not respond to the issue in the title of this thread as I experience it.
I downloaded Xplorer2 from http://zabkat.com/x2down.htm . It shows exactly the same problem, which is somewhat reassuring. I confirm it was NOT a solution for the issue mentioned in the title for me, so I cannot advise others to go down that route.
On my PC, it gave ALSO (as MS File Explorer) when creating a new folder this astonishing error message attached below (astonishing because the text of this error message does not look relevant at first sight).
Also, there is another fix mentioned below that is to delete in the regisry the following keys:
{2112AB0A-C86A-4ffe-A368-0DE96E47012E}

{A990AE9F-A03B-4e80-94BC-9912D7504104}Going to that extreme is perhaps fine for other people mastering the Windows 10 OS environment. I am a simple Advanced user.
I could easily technically do it (delete these keys in the registry with all due precautions) but I would not know why I am doing it and what could be other knock on effects, etc.
I would have to research first to which folders these keys belong. So it would take me more time (I am just a prudent amateur). Not knowing, I would not advice others with same level of expertise to go that route unless this is done only for experimenting (no risk of consequences of potentially degrading the registry).
I am not sure it would fix exactly the exact same issue as the one I have (the one in the title of this threat) in the specific setup in which I operate (note that I have a theme with one fixed picture; I mention this as this characteristic was mentioned by others - I have no clue if this is relevant).
I can only support other forum members views that this bug requires
1) MS more urgent attention from W10 support team,
2) a reason why it happened giving some confidence it is really fixed,
3) a precise KB relating to the fix.
Too much time lost to my taste.
Good luck.

Solution to your problem:
I had the same issue with my Windows 10, I wasn't able to rename and cursor was suddenly going
away while typing. I was looking for answers online nothing helped me even replies to your question here.
But I have fixed this myself, do the below and it will be fixed --->
GOTO --> Mouse and Touchpad Settings --> Touchpad --> there will be a drop down select -->No Delay (always on).
This will fix your issue as it fixed mine.

I have finally found the solution to this problem, I have had this for so long and have just been using a 3rd party app to rename folder etc. However, I found a solution it is a file that restores the default files in the folders description, use the file I attached, get it from the link >>> http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/error-rename-move-folders-windows-10/ <<<
To use it I just downloaded the zip file extracted the file inside to the desktop, ran it and it asks if you are sure click yes after that mine said it could not restore all the files but yours may not but after that everything works like new again :D
Hope this helps some people out as I struggled with this for a long time
P.S I did not create this I found it online
Thanks James

Instead of right-clicking the file name to Rename, right-click and select Properties instead. You will have all the time you need to name the file.

Thank you so much, you lovely person. Such an easy solution and it worked immediately, no reboot required. Now I can name and save some very important photos. Thank you again.

someone named Brian M?? gave a good solution to this. Go to your background picture selection and change the refresh time from a short time to a long time. This should work. I had the same problem. I changed the refresh time from 10 minutes to 6 hours, and it seems to have corrected the double issue of renaming a file and scrolling down to the lower files in a folder that has maybe 100 files.

This happened to me. I'ts because my desktop background changes every 5/10 seconds. Every time the background changes, it automatically disables the text edit function in explorer. Fixes are, turn the rotating background feature off or increase the time that images take to rotate.Tuesday, November 1, 2016 9:13 PM

A simple solution for renaming files, but possibly not the best solution depending on your needs, would be to disable 'Windows Search' in services. (I believe it also prompts you to disable the Work Folders service as well.)
In Cortana, type 'service' and you will notice that "Services Desktop App" will show up on the left. Right Click the app and select "Run as Administrator". A list of services will appear. Scroll down the list until you find "Windows Search". Right click that entry and select properties. A menu will appear. Click the button that says to "Stop" the service. Change the 'Start up Type' to "Manual", or better yet "Disable", and then, Click the "Apply" button. Restart the computer.
In the alternative, if you need Windows Search Services, you could simply stop and start the service at will.

I tried this twice. The first time, it did not work (and yes I did the reboot). As a workaround, I opened the file's properties and changed it there. This worked until today following a Windows 10 Update yesterday (Jan 12, 2017.) Following that update, I could no longer change file name and the system returned the "File does not exist . . ." that has been described. I opened the registry to the 5 keys and saw the "-BAD" text was no longer displayed. I edited the keys again adding "-BAD" a second time. I rebooted and rechecked the keys and confirmed that the edit had held. This time, I was able to open File Explorer and rename two files without any problem. Go figure! I hope I don't have to do this every time the is a Windows 10 update.

What a bloody brilliant idea! This "fix" worked for me. I'm no tech so the thought of going into the registries and deleting things scares the bejeebers out of me. I'm sticking with this one.
Thanks Hitechillbilly! :)

Thanks for this. Even though I run 64 bit and the lite version is 32 bit, it works perfectly for this folder renaming issue. Thanks again, and I would definitely recommend this fix to anyone having this issue with renaming folders. Cheers . . .Sunday, April 9, 2017 9:32 AM

I have this exact issue and I have been letting updates go through. I have both issues
1) Can't rename a file. It saves it to the old file name right away.
2) When scrolling through files in windows explorer like pictures, it takes you right back to the top automatically and won't let you scroll.
Any fix for this?

well i found the same problem but the answer is even easier what you have to do is to only keep only one wallpaper because it is the flipping of the wallpaper which is responsible for this all fuss.
thanks

I had the problem Window 7, where if I tried to rename a file or folder the box would stay up for a second and that was it. Also, if I pulled up the volume slider, it would not stay up long enough to change the volume. If I searched windows explorer, I could enter 1 or 2 characters then it would enter on its own. The problem was a San-disk thumb drive plugged into a USB port. I tried every thing, SFC, restore, regedit, etc. This drove me crazy, so I want to post the solution, since it is such a relief! I hope this helps someone else.Tuesday, August 15, 2017 3:07 AM

the problem here I have about 50 keys with -BAD# embedded and none match your criteria so for me this is not resolved.

Ok, this solve the problem but is an inconvenient and partial solution. Main issue is; this is happening after every update then return to normal after some restart, means still a bug.Friday, September 29, 2017 6:09 AM

This is the best description of the problem that I found here. Obviously the problem hasn't been fixed as over two years later I am still having the same results as this writer. It is very frustrating. Are there any alternatives to Windows Explorer?Friday, October 20, 2017 4:16 PM

I had the same issue and I finally found a very simple blog answer that fixed my problem.
Right-click on your desktop, choose "Personalize". Go to the "Colors" settings. Uncheck "Automatically pick an accent color from my background.
I hope this helps.

Millions of answers proposed, mostly obvious - but none worked.
Normally, holding the left button down on a file for a short while, highlights the filename - which you can then edit. Or, right click on the file, and select "rename". These had ceased working - no error statements, just nothing happened...
However, the proposed answer - to right click, select "Properties", and edit from there, worked.
Top score, Hitechillbilly - the Moderators and Tech people missed the understanding of this problem - and I've got the latest upgrades installed, and it is November 2017...!

I tried the regedit path of renaming the listed folders with "-bad". It worked, but didn't stay fixed. When I re-started the computer, the problem returned. I cannot delete, move, or rename empty file folders until I close the windows (the documents were already closed) on Word or Power Point, or any other software that was used on the files the folders once contained. It's not a big deal, but it's been around forever and pretty annoying -- seems like it should be an easy fix, but by systems folks, not by users like me.
With some serious trepidation, I've now tried removing those files in regedit. As with aconttrario, I am a user, not a systems guy, so it worries me that I don't know why I'm doing this or what could go wrong. I'll be back to report the results.

Hello,
i´ve had the same problem... nothing worked, until i had a look at my installed software.
I uninstalled Malwarebytes anti-spyware and as soon as the uninstallation was finished, i was able to rename files and folders :-) So have a look at your software, maybe you also have Malwarebytes installed... i´m sure there are other software products, which want to prevent you from any malware but maybe cause such side effects under specific circumstances.

No problem with that for me in Windows 10, but it takes at least 20 seconds to change the name after hitting enter...

Each case can be different. I struggle also renaming files in File Explorer. Also folders but that is not what brings me here.
I stopped all files synchronisation (Google Drive, unloaded Dropbox, Microsoft sync, and all the apps that may be active in the background).
No antivirus or malwarebytes.
Single colour in back screen (no diaporama).
Tried all remedies of various witches, especially the undocumented ones with excitement growing with the lack of documentation and foundations.
Work-around:
Going in the command window, I either pre-type a batch that I simply run or type directly a ren command. It always work. Not once a problem. So, it boils down to File Explorer.
I did not try yet doing this logged in as an other name. Just a thought of this test while typing.
I used several File Explorer alternatives but you have to be VERY courageous to use them. I will perhaps try again. No real choice. I am a bit desperate here.
I use W10 1809 17763.194 21/11/2018
Systematically, renaming a file in W10 is an excessive pain and I fear the precious time I will lose.
Symptoms:
- It does not take the rename entered 6/10 (about, no real counting)
- It is extraordinarily slow and it works ultimately 5/10
- It is extraordinarily slow and the file/folder disappears. I know then I can restore it from the bin! 1/10.
- when it fails, I often see the input field and even line changing colours, all freezing, very weird behaviours. I need to document this better.
- File Explorer aborts. Yes, in W10 in Dec 2018. Like in the good old days. It happened 3 times on last 2 hours that should have taken 10 minutes to do all my renames.
- The longer the re-keying, the higher the chances to fail, hence trying to beat the clock when typing. Good for my productivity, bad for my spelling
- Sometimes it really works normally. I don't know why.
NB: no other apps are running when the above is happening, I checked but with simple tools.
Tricks I also use:
- prepare the new name in Notebook or Word, copy it in the clipboard, proceed to your rename in file explorer, paste it in the input fields. If you do that fast, 9/10 it works. So, a great solution for me. But I am lazy and I don't do it all the times.
I think now of another solution that I will try. Listing the file names in Excel VBA, typing the new desired names next to the old ones I want to change, and running a little rename macro. It should work and it is relatively easy & efficient to do when many names to change. An overkill?
I scan all forums to find a meaningful solution, not the ones with "your system was corrupted by viruses, run SFC, etc." after which no one wants to hurt feelings by responding openly.
I haven't found a solution that is yet effective for my setup. Just a matter of time.
I suspect something in the background is running and taking the hand with high priority before I have finished typing my new name. But what? This is a job for a pro with suitable knowledge & equipment to find out. I am far from that.
Leads welcomed.
