normal.dotm in word and outlook issues RRS feed

  • HI All

    We have are in the process of upgrading our office from 2007 to office 2010

    now everything works fine bar one thing normal.dot/dotm in both outlook and word

    Now our setup is such we have templates for pretty much everything on a read only share on our network and a GPO which points everything one to those shares.

    In office/word/outlook 2007 works perfectly no issues

    However in word/outlook 2010 when you open them for the first time it trying to save the normal.dot to the shared template location.

    Is there a GPO setting which I have missed which points the normal.dotm back to their local machine.

    I can't continue the deployment until this is resolved.

  • Hi Chris,

    Make sure you didn't modify the setting under:

    Word Options --> Advanced --> File Locations --> User templates


    According to the support article 918064, if the exact message you received is:

    "Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal.dotm. Do you want to save those changes?"

    The issue may occur if any one  of the following conditions is true:

    • The Prompt before saving Normal template option is turned on.
    • An add-in or a macro that is changing the global template is installed on the computer.  
    • The computer is infected with a macro virus that changes the global template (Normal.dotm).
