Hyper-V VM server licensing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We have a VM running a 2012 R2 OS and are having an issue applying the license we have purchased.

I was advised that a 2019 standard license would work for licensing a 2012 server and this is not working when typing in the key to the VM.

Can anyone point out what could be the issue, maybe I'm supposed to type the key into the Hyper-V host?

  • you would need to get a key from your reseller or Microsoft.  A Windows Server 2019 key will not activate a 2012R2 version of Windows.  The exception here is if you're running windows 2019 server datacenter edition with Hyper-V and using AVMA.

If you need additional non-licensing help, please repost in the Hyper-V forum here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=winserverhyperv&filter=alllanguages

And include the version of Hyper-V the host is running, as well as it's config (is it running more than just the Hyper-V role)?
