File New create a document with a file shortcut to a template file RRS feed

  • Question

  • Until office 2010 it is possible to create a new document from a template if a file shortcut (*.lnk - file) to the template is used instead. The file shortcut was located in the office templates directory and pointed to the template in another directory.

In Office 2013 the same constallation opened the file shortcut binary(?!)

With the file open function in 2013 it is furthermore possible to open/ create a document chosing a file shortcut to the original file/template.

Know somone this issue and is there a workaround?

  • If you create a shortcut to winword.exe that includes the /t"template_path_and_name" switch, does that work? (Note that there is not a space between the "t" and the path.)

  • No that is not possible, because "Word - File new" only shows links to templates or documents.

If the link is called from windows 7 explorer everything is fine. The link to the templates let word generate a new document and the link to winword.exe with the template switch too.

  • Are you saying that it must be a hyperlink? I missed that part (obviously).

  • No it isn't. It was (until 2010) possible to work with links to common templates. In PowerPoint and Excel you can still create a file shortcut to a template and place it (the link) in the directory where your personal templates are. Excel and PowerPoint works as expected and go through the link to the original template and work with them - only Word will open the file shortcut itself?!

OK, you mean that if you place a Windows shortcut to a template in the User Templates folder, Word will open the template file, if you access it via File | New, instead of creating a new, untitled document? That is definitely different behavior compared to previous versions. :-(
