Migration From SPS 2003 to MOSS 2007 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have a SPS 2003 Implementation up and running since years with all the customizations and permissions and rights for all the users. I need now to migrate the SPS 2003 implementation to a new server where i installed MOSS 2007 on the same Domain and using the same active directory.

What i need to know is:
What kind of commands should i use to migrate around  30 Websites built on SPS 2003 to MOSS 2007? (stsadm commands)
Does the migration process would also copy all the Rights and permissions already set in SPS 2003 on all the libraries and lists available in my current version(2003) to the Migrated version (2007)?

What should be common between the Development environment and the Production environment in order to avoid Problems once moving to the Production?

Thanks a lot for your Support.

  • Hi,

If you haven't already please read through the planning to upgrade article on technet http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303420.aspx.  Because you are moving to new infrastructure I believe you need to use the database migration http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303436.aspx.  Read the planning section carefully particular the deciding the approach and handling customisations http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303429.aspx.

    Hope this helps

  • Thanks a lot for your reply, but i would need additional clarification :

I would need the "(Advanced) Database migration" as Upgrade Approach but what i care about is the permissions and access rights. Since the current implementation which needs to be upgraded contains plenty of specific rights on the user level. Using the Database migration are those permissions preserved or lost?

  • The permissions will come through with the migration.  As your environment is on the same domain you won't have any "cannot find user" issues.

  • Thanks a lot once again for your reply, i still have one question if possible

After migrating the solution to MOSS 2007 on the new server, i need to add some customization and components to the solution.

So i have to export the MOSS 2007 Solution from the new Production environment to the Development environment.

Knowing that there are a huge physical distance between both environments, so how could be handle the issue of users while not having the same domain on the development neither the same Active directory.

Am i going to face User permission errors ?

Am able to have the existing customization and modify it without any problem?

If i same the current customization as template and then i implement it on my development environment would it work fine even if i have custom webparts deployed on the existing Solution?

    Thanks for your support
