2008 r2 Servers cannot connect to NetBIOS named share of 2003 Server on occasion RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a small farm of 2008 R2 Remote Session Host/ TS boxes (running on a couple VMWare ESXi boxes)

Users have access to shares on other 2008/2008R2 servers and ONE 2003 server (required for the application)

At seemingly random times users on any one of the servers loose the ability to connect to the 2003 server's shares by a particular type of name. Sometimes it's NETBIOS, sometimes is FQDN, sometimes it's IP. ie \\Server\Share, \\Server.domain.com\share or even \\\

It could be any of the RS/TS servers (though it seems more common on some than others), and it eventually goes away or changes to another type. It's less likely after a clean boot for a while.

When the problem exists no one on that box can access any of shares on that 2003 Server by one or even two methods, including administrator. The error displayed is often "Network Name cannot be found" (it varies though) but the name is always ping-able at a command line. DNS is fine, WINS is running, and I've tried HOSTS file entries as well but the problem persists. Shares on 2008 servers are never affected, and users on the other boxes do not have the same problem at the same time.

    Any Suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.
