How to open the F12 key debugger in HTA like IE? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Press the F12 key on IE opens the built-in debugger, that's a wonderful feature.

Change the extended filename from .htm to .hta,  in another word, run the same program but use mshta.exe instead of IE then the F12 key doesn't open the debugger. Is there a switch to enable it, a different hotkey or interface to open it, or simply not supported?

If not supported, please .... I wish there's a plan.

Node-webkit already has it for long but for many automation goals HTA is still more suitable.

  • No MSHTA is not IE. It uses the system debugger and is not enabled for the IE Developer toolbar (Not a debugger as you claim).

To use the system debugger you will need to install the Microsoft System Debugger tools. It does not work well with HTAs.

Microsoft is removing the HTA.  It will not likely be part of the next version of Windows. You should switch to PowerShell.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
