  • MS16-097 is related to windows but has different patches related to other microsoft products too

My concern is even if my server doesn't have any other products and just windows, the fix says the patch is not applicable

    from: https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/3177393
    Applies to:

Windows 10, Windows 10 Version 1511, Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation, Windows 8.1 Enterprise, Windows 8.1 Pro, Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, Windows Server 2012 Standard, Windows Server 2012 Essentials, Windows Server 2012 Foundation, Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1, Windows 7 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista Service Pack 2, 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 3, Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 2, Word Viewer, Skype for Business 2016, Microsoft Lync 2013, Skype for Business, Microsoft Lync 2010 Attendee, Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007

Is your machine/product in the above 'Applies to' list?
If so, then this update should be detected as applicable, unless the machine has already been updated by a superseding/later update.
This update, for some scenarios, was superseded by the October rollup, so if you've already applied that October update, then this August update would not be applicable.

Check the MUCatalog, and click on the product/platform of your system, and then click on the 'Package Details' tab to see the supersedence information (if any)

  • Hi, you've posted into the Server/Group Policy forum, but your question seems related to Office?
