Work Folders for Windows 7 Issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • Trying to install Work Folders on a Windows 7 Professional laptop.  The laptop meets all the system requirements for install.    The laptop is also a domain member.  The install goes fine but when trying to actually setup a work folder I receive the following error.

    Work Folders

    This location doesn't work

Choose a location that isn't reserved by Windows and is on a drive formatted with NTFS

Details = The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. (0x80070422)

The hard drive is formatted with NTFS and it is not encrypted.  I have tried everything I can think of.  Moved the default folder to somewhere else, set the work folders service as Automatic and it is running.  Setup the folder a head of time and gave full access rights.  Has anyone come across this issue and know how to resolve?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

  • Hi JeffinIT,

" I did a test and upgraded to Windows 8.1 and now it works fine.  But I still have many other Windows 7 users with the same issue"
So the issue only occurs with the Windows 7 machine ,right ?  Will the default folder suffer the same issue ?

I have made a test and I can setup the "work folder"  in the Windows 7 machine .Please ensure you have downloaded the right version work folder installation for the Windows 7 machine.According to my experience ,this issue may be related to the user account .If it is possible ,choose an account that has been setup successfully to have a check or setup with the administrator account to have a troubleshoot .

  • Thanks for the reply.  I have read the above link and tried many different locations throughout the hard drive and nothing worked.  It appears there isn't anywhere I can set this up without getting that error.  I did a test and upgraded to Windows 8.1 and now it works fine.  But I still have many other Windows 7 users with the same issue.

  • This thread is quite old but I have an answer for this issue. Maybe it helps.

This error is related to difference between EFS (Encrypting File System) in Windows7/Win2012. For that disabling EFS is needed.

    My solution step by step:

    1. I created a new OU and I moved all win7 computers from computers container to the new OU.

    2. From Group Policy Management console I created a new GPO for my custom OU. I checked Enforce and Block Inheritage

    3. In the new GPO Policies, Security, Public Key Policy, EFS properties I checked "Don't allow" for "File Encyption using EFS" and I edited User and Computer Templates for automatic setup of Work Folder into client machines (forcing automatic settings of clients and providing the URL for server).

    4. Same operations for "Default Domain Policy" above.

    5. In the Group Policy Management i did GPO Update from the new GPO context menu.

After win7 client logged in again, the Work Folders was automatically installed but I encounterred "sync error". To solve this error I only ran KB2887595 update on the server.

    Good luck!
