Automatic Database Maintenance and Event ID 1221 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

On one of my servers it looks like the Automatic Database Maintenance seems to be running 4 times on each database, well at least it is doing 4 defras per day. When I go in to the Event viewer I see 4 different 1221 events for each database.

I thought there should only be one per day?

Am I right or wrong, if I am right how do I stop it doing it 4 times?

    Thanks.

  • There is a 1221 event for each database.  This is normal.  You can adjust online maintenance for each database as necessary by right-clicking on the database in question and choosing properties.

  • Which database?  Is it the mailbox database or the public folder database?  For some weird reason, if you have online setup for a mailbox datbase from 1AM to 5AM, then it will run only once.  However, if you have it set up for a public folder database, it will run once each hour.  So, you see one 1221 event for the mailbox database and 5 1221 events for the PF store.

Exchange has always done this.  I'm guessing it is probably because in the old days Microsoft expected that the public folder database would be subject to logs of adds/changes/deletes and therefore need more maintenance than the mailbox databases.  Of course, 13+ years of Exchange has shown us that the exact opposite is true.

As Mike said, this is normal, though.

  • Note for Exchange 2010 there is no more 1221 or 70x event log entries.  to get whitespace info in 2010 do the following:

    Get-MailboxDatabase Database1 -Status | FL AvailableNewMailboxSpace
