migrating from SCCM 2012 R2 to SCCM 17xx

Question
-
Rather than upgrading to SCCM 1610 & then upgrading our OS from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2, is there a way to build a brand new 2012 or 2016 server with a new SQL 2016 & import our SCCM 2012 R2 database. What are the complications? Being able to transfer the ContentLibrary? Anything else?
Thanks

Yes, backup and restore the site onto a new site server running Server 2012 R2 and the same SQL version that you are running now, upgrade SQL after the restore, and then upgrade the site to CB 1702 using the media and then 1706 or 1710 using in console updates.
There are a lot of steps but it enables you to preserve all of your current configuration in ConfigMgr.

Thanks
Has anyone run across an article or blog where someone has gone through a similar site recovery process?

There was another blog post from a PFE that was somewhat similar but it looks like its been removed.

Building a brand new server is too complicated. We'll do the standard upgrade route SCCM 2012 R2 -> SCCM 1606 -> SCCM 17xxx
