Installing windows 7 on OS HD & maintaining XP data on 2nd HD

    Question

  • I'm replacing Windows Xp on my home computer with Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have my current (win XP) OS & programs on a 500 GB HD, and all my data is on a 1 TB HD.

I plan to format & install Windows 7 on the 500 GB drive, & install all working programs.

I want to preserve all the data (750GB) on the 1TB drive.

I presume I should unplug the 1 TB drive & do a normal fresh install on C drive. (please confirm?)

(I know I need to set my bios to boot from the DVD drive 1st.)

I'll be setting up an Admin & standard user profiles.

I then want to be able  plug the 1TB drive back in and see all my data.

and have Windows 7 store "My Documents" on the 1TB HD.

Can you help me please ?

    Thank you in advance

  • Just to be sure, unplug the 1TB HDD and do your installation on the 500GB HDD, this isn't necessary, but just to be safe.  After the installation, plug the 1TB drive in and yes, you'd be able to see your existing data there.

  • Just a quick follow up.

    SUCCESS!

The installation of windows 7 64 bit went pretty much as planned.

I plugged the 1TB drive in after shutting down win 7.

On start-up the drive was visible, all files, folders etc were readable & writable.

One small hick-up was the 64 bit drivers for my Epson CX-4800 printer scanner.

The new drivers installation would hang at the scanner twin driver installation.

This was resolved by a phone call to EPSON tech support.

Required detaching ethernet cable(internet), truning off Windows Firewall, running install, which was ok now.

Then turning firewall back on, & reconnecting ethernet cable.

All is well & running fine now!.
