Are SATA drives and IDE Drives compatable? RRS feed

  •     Hello, can some one tell me if Windows XP can boot from an 40 pin IDE drive and be able to asign a drive letter to a SATA drive the is visable in Computer mangarment?

  • Not sure to understand your question but maybe this will help you.

    XP can boot from any HD. If you get some trouble to do it, probably the solution is in your BIOS options: boot sequence, HD sequence if your have more than one drive, controler option such as IDE or RAID or AHCI. One thing about AHCI: if your OS was installed with IDE settings and you decide to change it later with AHCI (or vice versa), you will get a BSOD or MBR error message.

    An other thing. If you wish to change your drive letter, it is pretty hard to do so with your "system" disk (if I remember, it is simply impossible). For another drive or partition, you can do this with the XP drive manager (somewhere with the performance tools, in computer management).

    Finally, about the 40 pins, if you have a such old HD but use a newest 80 pins flat cable, maybe your drive will not be recognize by your computer.
