Windows Explorer Crashing CONSTANTLY RRS feed

  • Question

  • Got a curious problem with Windows 7:

When I boot up my computer, Windows 7 kicks in and starts up and everything's hunky-dory. It starts the taskbar, and starts launching my various QuickLaunch icons. When it gets to my network connection status, however, it encounters some kind of error, restarts windows explorer, and tries again. The thing is, it never resolves the problem. It basically runs in an infinite loop until I go insane and kill explorer.exe from the task manager.

I've tried rebooting several times, but it didn't help, and I still ran into the same problem when I booted in safe mode.

I thought that it might be a virus, so I ran a scan with my antivirus software (AVG 9 Free version), and got rid of what it came up with, but that didn't help either.

It's gotten to the point where I'm just about to reinstall Windows, but I really don't want to do that if I don't have to. Unfortunately restore points aren't enabled on my computer, or else I'd just do that.

Anybody have any ideas for what I could do?

  • @Andre.Ziegler: I apologize, I didn't know how SkyDrive functioned. The dmp file can be found here: http://cid-205511e3b9e81678.office.live.com/embedicon.aspx/.Public/explorer.exe.2376.dmp

    Hi,

the Explroer crashes while displaying the Tooltips in the systray:

    explorer!CTrayNotify::_ShowInfoTip

Several other people had this because of broken Windows files.

Please start the command prompt with admin rights [1] and run sfc [2]:

    sfc.exe /scannow

Does it detect and repair broken files?

    best regards

  • Sounds like the virus/malware isn't fully getting eradicated. Any chance you can connect this infected drive to another hosted OS with an AV and scan the attached drive from there? Try different AV as well as the overlap of one might catch what another missed.

The reason I suggest this is some of the most nasty viruses can stick around when scanning from the hosted OS and many times they can be detected as an attached disc.

  • Hi,

please download this reg file from my SkyDrive:

    http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer.reg

and make a double click on the file to import it.

When the Windows Explorer crashes, Windows Error Reporting Service [1] creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the file to your public Skydrive [2] folder and post the link here. I take a look at the dump with the Debugger, maybe I can see which Shell extension is the cause.

  • I'll be able to do that in a little while, so I'll give it a shot

  • I don't think you quite grasp what I mean when I say "constantly." I literally mean that it restarts itself, and within seconds of doing that it crashes again.

I tried what you suggested, but explorer couldn't stay functional for long enough for me to import your registry file, let alone upload a dump file

  • You can run taskmanager and open regedit.exe to import the reg settings ;)
You can also try to boot in safe mode to import the registry file.

  • You're right about the Task Manager, but that still doesn't solve my problem of not being able to upload the dump file.

Also, the problem doesn't go away in safe mode. From my original post: "I still ran into the same problem when I booted in safe mode"

  • Simply start the browser and upload the file. You can also use the command prompt to copy the dmp files to an external drive and upload from a different PC.

  • @ cschaar: Ran a scan of my drive on another computer, and removed the five viruses it picked up. Unfortunately, that didn't solve my problem. Thanks for the tip though.
