Move Document Library from one Site to Another RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Would like to find out in Sharepoint Server 2007, could we move or copy the whole document library (with folders, sub-folders, documents, folders' access permission along) from one Site to another?

    Thank you.

  • You might want to check out the STSADM extensions that have been created by Gary Lapointe : http://stsadm.blogspot.com.

More specifically have a look at http://stsadm.blogspot.com/2007/09/importexportcopy-lists.html as his extensions allow you to export and import a list including its content and permissions.

You require admin access to the server to install and deploy the WSP package though. And obviously you also need admin access to execute the STSADM commands.

  • Not sure here but you can try to save the library as a template and then select the function to add all content. When you save it as a template you can use it on another site and hopefully it will take the content with it.

    Good luck,

  • If you are within the same site collection, you can move or copy document libraries and maintain metadata & permissions by using Site Actions > Manage Site Content and Structure.

  • Hi,

Yes, I suppose the sites are created under the same site collection.

As the sites setup I have now is one parent site with few child sites, eg. childsite1, childsite2,...etc

And I'm trying to move one of the document library from childsite1 to childsite2.

I followed the instructure given, in the Manage Site Content and Structure function, I highlighted the document library that I wanted to move, and click on the drop-down arrow.  However, I'm not able to move the library/folder, as the functions move or copy had being gray off, except for delete function.

I also tried the method gave by Rick, I managed to save the library as template, but I don't know how to use the template. As I couldn't find a place to open the template.

    Any advise?

    Appreciate help very much.

    Thank you.

  • When you saved the template go to the site where you want to place the list. Go to site actions -> site-configuration and in one of those columns there is a link called listtemplates or something like that. Go to that link and upload you template. Now when you create a new document list the template is being showed in the category list.

    Good luck

  • The Move features in the Manage Site Content is used to move subsites and does not work on lists like document library.

    Thanks

  • I believe that SharePoint Designer can do this with its export/import functionality.

  • Hi all!

I have got the same task - need to move some folders (with all files, subfolders and its meta data like file versions etc) to another location (for expl, from root site to subsite or different site). SharePoint Designer with import\export don't save file versions for expl, template save only 100mb max ...

Mb there are some utils exist for this purpose? Any ideas?
