DPM2012 not sure which patch to run, problems with restore. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have a fresh install of DPM2012 on a Windows Storage Server 2012 x64. All was OK until I started trying to figure out which updates to install. Right now in the control panel it shows KB2751230 was installed yesterday around 4pm using the windows update. After installing the KB I had to update my agent on my one test server from 4.0.1908.0 to 4.0.1920.0. I keep reading about SP1 fixing problems with restore on DPM2012 so then I tried to install KB2822782 with no success. When I try to restore a file I get the following error and the program closes.

AppName: mmc  AppVer: 4.0.1908.0 ModName: mmc.exe
    ModVer: 6.2.9200.16384  StackHash: A8149BFA

    Problem signature:
      Problem Event Name: DPMException
      Application Name: mmc
      Application Version: 4.0.1908.0
      Module Name: mmc.exe
      Module Version: 6.2.9200.16384
      Exception Name: System.NullReferenceException
      Exception Point: Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.UI.RecoveryPage.RecoveryTreeNodeFactory.CleanupEmptyNodes

I see where others have had the same issues with DPM2012. I would say that something did not get updated with KB2751230 that's why the error is showing the previous version of 4.0.1908.0. Any advice what to do next would be nice.

  • Hi,

We have announcements in the general and setup forms stating the following:

DPM 2012 support for Windows Server 2012

    Hello Everyone,

System Center DPM 2012 is not supported running on Windows Server 2012.  We have had reports of DPM 2012 console crashes when navigating to the recovery tab if DPM 2012 is installed on Windows server 2012.  This issue is fixed in System Center 2012 SP1 which supports being installed on Windows 2012 operating system.

If you are already in this condition,  you have two options:

    A) You can upgrade to System Center 2012 Sp1.

    B) You can backup the DPMDB, rebuild the DPM server using Windows 2008 R2 install DPM 2012, then restore your current database. The process is explained in the below technet article.

    Recovering DPM servers

We also do not support protecting Windows Server 2012 workloads using SCS DPM 2012, you must upgrade to DPM 2012 Sp1.   Please do not expect any support for DPM 2012 running on Windows Server 2012, or issues while protecting data sources in Windows Server 2012.
