Server 2019 Technical preview Get-WindowsCapability problems RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have downloaded and installed the Windows Server 2019 (Build 17623), but when I try installing OpenSSH via the command:

    Get-WindowsCapability -Online | ? Name -like 'OpenSSH*'

    I get the following error:

    Get-WindowsCapability : Get-WindowsCapability failed. Error code = 0x800f0950
    At line:1 char:1
    + Get-WindowsCapability -Online | ? Name -like 'OpenSSH*'
    + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Get-WindowsCapability], COMException
        + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.Dism.Commands.GetWindowsCapabilityCommand

I tried this on the Windows Server 1709 build, there it works.

    Any ideas?

  • Get the same on a 2019 preview. Appears it does not know where to go for its info to me.

I did check Settings > Apps, Manage optional features and then the history, showed OpenSSH Client as installed. So I tried ssh and it worked. Can you try that see if that works?

  • The client is installed, but I need OpenSSH server.

In 1709 I can install it with Get-Windowscapability. I indeed believe there is still a problem with Get-WindowsCapability in the 2019 release.

  • Ok appears that is broken on the server, that command does work on Windows 10 17627 preview.

  • No longer works on Windows Server 1709 Build either. Just did a fresh install of 1709, fully updated and this command does not work.

  • Try using dism instead of Get-WindowsCapability, it worked for me:

    dism /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:OpenSSH.Client~~~~0.0.1.0 /LimitAccess  /Online
