  • Question

  • Hi all,

I would like to know if it is safe to change my host PC name while running Hyper-V

Will my VMs be affected by this change?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi Gerrit,

Is the Hyper-V host part of a cluster or standalone?

If it's a standalone you can simply rename the Hyper-V host, it should not affect the virtual machines, but it might impact applications if they use the name of the host for something (dependencies).

If the Hyper-V host is part of a failover cluster, then you would have to:

    1. Drain the Hyper-V node that you want to rename.

    2. Evict the cluster node.

    3. Rename the server.

    4. Add back the cluster node to the cluster.

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • Hi,

Thanks for posting in our forum!

If your Hyper-V host is a standalone Host, I think we can change our Host name safely, if our virtual machine or Hyper-V is a role of  a failover cluster, then considering resource dependency, changing the host name may affect the virtual machine.

For more information about Windows cluster resource dependencies, please see:
