How to Reassign Distribution point to another secondary site RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Experts,

we have a standalone primary site configured with 6 secondary sites, now i need to reassign a distribution point that from site 1 to site 2 without having to redistribute any content to the DP.

we have multiple DP that need to reassigned as one of my secondary site is having issue and currently working on that issue and we have around 6 DP pointing to that site and content distribution is not happening to these sites as the secondary site is having issues.

we have SCCM 1806 with the updated hotfix KB4462978 installed in our environment.

    Kindly share your suggestions.

  • Hi Balagi,

It’s good that you have SCCM 1806 with the updated hotfix KB4462978 as the Reassign a distribution point is support Started in version 1802, this feature lets you reassign a distribution point to another primary site without redistributing the content. This action updates the site system assignment while persisting all of the content on the server.

If you need to reassign multiple distribution points, first perform this action on a single distribution point. Then proceed with additional servers one at a time.

Follow these steps to reassign a distribution point:

    1. In the Configuration Manager console, connect to the central administration site.
    2. Go to the Administration workspace, and select the Distribution Points node.
    3. Right-click the target distribution point, and select Reassign Distribution Point.
    4. Select the target site server and site code to which you want to reassign this distribution point.

Monitor the reassignment similarly as when you add a new role.

For rest of the information please this Microsoft Article:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/servers/deploy/configure/install-and-configure-distribution-points

    Hope this helps...

  • this feature lets you reassign a distribution point to another primary site

That is not the OP's scenario, they only have a single primary site and would like to move DPs between secondary sites, not primary sites and to my knowledge this feature will not work for that.

The only possibility here is to rebuild the DP. You can use content prestaging to move the content without transfering across the WAN again.

Note that there is a uservoice item for this as well that I think was mistakenly closed: https://configurationmanager.uservoice.com/forums/300492-ideas/suggestions/9197001-ability-to-move-distribution-point-from-one-second. I'm going to follow-up and see if I can get clarification.

  • Hi Jason,

Thanks for the update, i have a question here if try the reassign DP i am getting other secondary sites to which it can be reassigned.

so this option will not work ? , i havent tested this option yet.

So the reassign DP option will work only for the Primary sites and not for the Secondary sites ?

    Kindly share your updates.

    Thanks

  • Per the documentation and the feedback that I've received from the product group, no. I can't say that I've ever tried though.

  • Balaji,

As I said in my very first reply, you can re assign Primary sites. for secondary site also it will work but  it will first uninstall the Secondary Site before removing the old Distribution Point. Next the new distribution point will be installed and configured before the content is converted to the new Content Library

    https://configmgrblog.com/2013/08/08/reassigning-distribution-points-in-configmgr-2012-r2/

    r2-pre-reassign-00

You are now able to configure the reassigned DP as Pull DP

    Hope this helps...

  • Hi Thuyavan,

Thanks for the update, i have 4 Distribution point pointing to a secondary site name it as SC1 and another 4 Pointing to a different secondary site SC2, so my requirement is to reassign the 4 DP pointing to SC1 to SC3 and DP pointg to SC2 to SC4.

So if i do this will this will uninstall the secondary site role from SC1 & SC2 ? or the changes will take only for the DP pointing to a new secondary site.

also i am not going to reassign the DP role configured in the secondary site server.

    Thanks

  • Because as noted, the documentation explicitly calls out reassigning from one *Primary* site to another *Primary* site. This was confirmed by the product team feedback I received also.

The blog you linked to above is for migrating from one site hierarchy to another site hierarchy and not for reassigning a DP between sites in the same hierarchy.

  • Hi Thuyavan & Jason,

Thanks for the update, i am building a test lab to have a check on the option, i have another query also now i have the DP as member of a DP group & while distributing the content we always selected DP group. so i remove any DP from the DP group will it have any impact to the content that was already distributed or present in the DP.

for example i have DP as DP1, DP2, DP3 & DP4 now i have added these to the DP group DPGroup1. also whlie distributing the content selected DPgroup1 for distribution and content got distributed successfully to all the 4 DP. now if i remove the DP1,DP2,DP3&DP4 from DPgroup1 will it have any impact to the content ? kindly share your suggestions.

    Thanks

  • Hi Balaji,

Based on my knowledge it will not have any impact , but Jason could be right , I am not sure  and have to do the POC to confirm.

    Hope this helps!
