OneNote 2016 Authentication issue with on premises SharePoint Server published via AD FS RRS feed

    When the user opens a new OneNote Notebook, the user gets authenticated and everything works as expected. After a period, the edge access cookie retires and the user must reauthenticate. Using OneNote 2013 an authentication prompt by AD FS (MS Office Forms Based) will be shown and the user can authenticate. With OneNote 2016: nothing is happening. No Authentication prompt – nothing.

     

    I did a quick analysis on the network traffic. OneNote 2013 has a user-agent string compliant to MS-OFBA while OneNote 2016 does not. OneNote 2016 user agent string starts with OneNote… and is not compliant to this requirement: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn366023.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

     

    Environment: WIN 2012 R2 AD FS + WAP, SharePoint 2016, OneNote 2016 on WIN7 or WIN10

    I have just stumbled across this article while searching for something else.  Was this issues resolved? Did you have an issue accessing OneNote (or other Office files) while on-site too? I came across an issue opening a document in Word 2016 that was on SharePoint 2016 with ADFS authentication setup.
