Managing several projects (Portfolio Management) on MS Project 2013? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everyone

I've set up a stand alone Portfolio Plan (not a Master Plan linked to individual project plans) which contains all projects in our portfolio listed at a task level. So far it has worked well for the purpose of resource management, but I am having a fair bit of trouble with the budget management and cost tracking side of things.

Is it possible to do the following:

    1. Allocate a budget for each project (listed at task level) which is broken down by financial year.

    2. View project cost by financial year.

    3. Track individual project costs and measure against budget by financial year.

I have only managed to get as far as setting up the financial year option with the plan.

  • Hi,

The budget resources are available for what you need to do. They allow you tracking timephased budget work/cost over your project. Unfortunately they can only be assigned on the project summary row (line 0). But you could anyway create cost resources (with a flag "budget" created as a custom field to identify them) and assign budget on your tasks, as explained in the link above.

    Hope this helps,
