New Installation of MSPS 2010? RRS feed

  • Question

  • 1. Has anyone been through a new installation of MSPS 2010 recently? Not an upgrade but a fresh new implementation? We are planning a new implementation and I would be interested in sharing notes and learning any gotchas / lessons learnt experience from someone who's trodden that path before.

    2. I hear that Microsoft shares a 'Requirements Gathering Template' with their Partners. I'd like to get hold of a copy of that template if anyone knows where I can get one.

    Thanks

  • Hi Anna,

Pretty much everything you need is available on technet at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/library/cc197605.aspx covering nearly everything you will require. The deployment section itself includes a number of templates and guides for determining requirements, security etc http://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/library/ff603997.aspx

I would have to say that the best place to find info on gotcha's and lessons learnt would have to be the EPM blogs and these forums. You can get a link to a few of the official MS blogs from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/projectserver/default.aspx plus Christophe used to maintain an OPML feed of other EPM blogs that may be of use (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/chrisfie/archive/2010/01/26/latest-microsoft-project-rss-feeds-january-2010.aspx).

    Hope this helps,

  • Also go buy the orange book from MS Project Experts.....it's the best source
out there right now - and I think it talks about requirements gathering a
    bit....

  • As for gotchas, the true test ((IMHO) to see if everything is working correctly is the ability to use the sample reports in Excel services.  If you get an error opening these, then you need to check both the secure store service application and the Excel Services service application.  Also, make sure you can build your OLAP cubes.

  • Thanks Andrew. Yes, I've a copy of Gary Chefetz's book.

Ben - thanks for the tips. Will keep an eye out for those.

  • Hi Ben,

Unfortunately I am struggling to have this up and running. Both Excel and SSS services were already re-configured number of times as per TechNet steps but I am still stuck and receive "An error occurred while accessing application id ProjectServerApplication from Secure Store Service. The following connections failed to refresh: Project Server - Simple Projects List " whenever I try to use sample reports. ULS logs do not report any issues.. Any advice?

I am more than happy to provide any additional info if needed?

    Regards,

    Tomasz

  • Hi Tomasz,  if the ULS logs are not reporting issues, then they are not turned on to log the events!  Turn them on, and then see what specific errors you get.
