Skype For Business Online Bandwith Calculation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Peeps,

    I need your help.

My deployment consist of a hybrid solution. Skype for Business Online + Skype for Business on prem for PSTN calling.

Most of the team will not be using PSTN calling just 1 user.

However everybody has been moved to skype for Business online and therefore are hosted online.

My question surrounds correct bandwith calculations.

    I found this website https://via.co.uk/lync-bandwidth-calculator/

nonetheless I was hoping someone would be able to explain to me the following.

We have a 60/60mbps Internet connectionBecause all users are homed online - does that mean that sip 2 sip calls do not traverse the network but have to leave my PC out to Office365 servers and then back into the office to a colleague sitting 2 steps away ?

And even if we were both homed with on prem skype for business. we still need internet to be able to communicate ( cannot just use LAN, correct).

I guess what I am trying to get at is - does the LAN network speed play any role here. on my laptop I have speed of up to 400mbps and with a switch 1gbps - do these factor in the calculations ?

  • Hi robinhood,

    Welcome to our forum.

When user are homed at online, we still need Internet when we play a call because call will go to Office 365 through Internet. The call will go to Office 365 then back to colleague’s client. However, if the all caller are on-premise, we needn’t Internet when we play an internal call, we need Internet when we call to Office365 user or external users. We could refer to the following link for brandwidth calculation:

  • Hello Robin,

In your case everything is internet, your LAN/Switch port has nothing to do in this, even a 100mbps card would be more and more then enough for this.

the main thing is internet speed you have with your office 365..

  • Apologies for the delay in getting back to you both.

So because all the users are homed on O365 ( All peer to peer - desktop sharing , ppt presentation , voice and audio) require Internet. This must be calculated in the upload Internet calculation)

However If we were homed on premises and all users were on the same LAN. This will not count on the Internet bandwidth.

Does this sound about right ?
