Change \offline\ to \online\ RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

We do hava a protection group with all our VMs. Lots are showing as \offline\serverXX

We have been adding a SCSI-Adapter. Since then, the event viewer on the thosts does not show warnings about the missing SCSI-Adapter anymore (Hyper-V-VMMS Event 10103 changed to Event 19070/19080)

When try to change the protection group and klick "refresh" on the host, they remain as "offline"

When we remove them from the protection group and we go to modify the group again, they show as online.

This will cause DPM to run a conistency check.

Is there a way to simply "refresh and change to \online\ " without removing and readding the vm?

    Thanks for advice

  • Hi,

As noted, the online / offline caption in the DPM UI is static and does not reflect the current state that the VM will be backed up the next time.   If your Hyper-V server is Windows 2012 R2 and the DPM Server is DPM 2012 R2 + Update Rollup-3 (UR3) DPM V4.2.1254 or later, then all VM host level backups are performed online regardless of what the caption says.

This Hyper-V change is detailed here.

  • If the machines are 2008R2 or below other considerations are in effect. Here are the steps I had to perform to get it to work

    • Verified the Hyper-V Writer Metadata on the Host by running the Diskshadow command.

      Diskshadow

                  List Writers

    • Checked the Caption for the VM in question.
      ========================================
      + Component "Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer:\B66636CA-DC3E-473F-8777-0936ED77C6D3"
      - Name: B66636CA-DC3E-473F-8777-0936ED77C6D3
      - Logical path:
      - Full path: \B66636CA-DC3E-473F-8777-0936ED77C6D3
      - Caption: Offline\server name

      ========================================

    • Found that we do not have the Shadow Storage association for C: drive inside the VM.

    • Created it by running the following command :

              Vssadmin add shadowstorage /for=c: /on=c: /maxsize=20%

    • Restarted the VMMS service on the host.

    • The Caption was still Offline hence we verified the ICs version as mentioned below :

    • On the Host verify the value at the following location in the Registry.

                       HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Virtualization\GuestInstaller\Version\Microsoft-Hyper-V-Guest-Installer-Win6x-Package

    • Check the version for the VMBUS.sys driver under the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder in the Guest.

    • The VMBUS.sys in the Guest should be same or higher than the values in the Registry on the Host.

    • Found that the Host has the version - 6.3.9600.16384.

    • Guest Version - 6.1.7601.17514

    • Updated ICs in the VM as mentioned below  :

    • Open the VM Connect Window by double clicking on the Guest in the Hyper-V console on the Host.

    • Insert Integration Components Setup Disk” by clicking the option under the “Action” menu item in the Menu Bar at the top in the VM Connect window launched above.

    • Launch the DVD program in the Guest.

    • Reboot once the IC installation completes.
