Windows.old RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm going to be attempting to uninstall Vista today, and I've been reading http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/933168.  The thing that I am confused about is I cannot find the Windows.old folder in my C drive.  However, I do have a folder named $WINDOWS.~Q and I was wondering if that is the same thing.  I saw on some web page that Windows will sometimes create a folder named $WINDOWS.~Q instead of Windows.old but I can't remember where I saw that.  I was wondering if I follow the instructions on http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/933168 if I could use the $WINDOWS.~Q folder instead of the Windows.old folder.  If not then I guess I'll just have to install XP over Vista.

  • Did you do an upgrade or custom install of Vista?

The windows.old folder is only created if you do a custom install of Vista over XP, so if you did an actual upgrade, you cannot just revert back to xp with that installation. You would have to format...or create a 2nd partition & install xp on it, then delete the vista partition.
