Windows Updates for Server 2016 Core RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Microsoft,

We have around 42 Hyper-V hosts with Server 2016 Core as the OS. We have not been able to update any core server since May of 2018. Could you please let me know if you published new updates for Server Core?

I yes, could you please provide me with the KBs?

    Thank you,

  • Hi,

Latest cumulative update for Windows Server 2016 is KB4462928 (OS Build 14393.2580)

The latest cumulative updates require that you install the latest servicing stack (currently KB4132216, from May 17, 2018).

I'm guessing that you are missing the servicing stack, that is why are you are not able to install the latest CU.

  • I've got a couple of Server 2016 Standard Core DCs (no other roles, aside from DNS Server and DHCP Server) that are having the same problem. They haven't found any updates in nearly a year, now.

I installed the servicing stack KB mentioned here (KB4132216) and rebooted; still no updates available. I then found what appears to be the latest servicing stack (KB4485447) and installed it, restarted, yet still no updates are found.

I went a step further and made a brand-new Server 2016 Standard Core VM on the host and it finds newer updates available without even having any roles installed yet. (2019-03 Cumulative Update for Windows Server 2016 for x64-based Systems KB4489889)

We don't have a WSUS server, just a GPO forcing checking for updates and downloading them but not installing them for servers. No issues on any of the GUI-based Windows Servers we have, but both Core ones have this problem. How do I fix it? Windows Update being effectively broken is a serious concern. Half the reason we went with Core DCs in the first place was to improve the security footprint; which is now being mitigated by them not being able to get updates.

I also stopped the Windows Update service and renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder and restarted; still nothing.

Furthermore, the last time they installed a Windows Defender definition update was on 07/14/18, KB2267602.

    How can I fix this?
