  • Your Win8 PC is likely to have come with UEFI and uses GPT hard disks, so you need to install a hotfix on the server to allow it to back up the client PCs. There’s a separate fix for each server version:

    SBS 2011 Essentials
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2781270

    Windows Storage Server 2008R2 Essentials
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2781274

    Windows Home Server 2011
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2781272

Install the hotfix, reboot the server, and you should be able to back up the PC, although in my experience, you also need to exclude any partitions on the PC that don't have drive letters.

  • The WHS 2011 download page shows 3 hotfixes.  Two have a fix name of "KB2781272" and one has a fix name of "UEFIHotfix".  Which one(s) do I need to install to fix this problem?  Thanks.

  • I tried both the hotfix and the KB-option on my Surface Pro 3, but both was rejected (not compatible) by my win 8.1 client. I use WHS 2011.

  • You need to install the hotfix on your WHS2011 box, not on the client PC.

If you still have backup problems after the hotfix, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2934953
