  • How much of it will it let you use? If it is only around 2 TB this may be why. MBR only supports 2 TB. You would have to convert it to a GPT partition.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2581408

Click Start, Right click on Computer, click Manage, click on Disk Management, Select the disk in question, right click and select Properties, Select the Volumes tab and under partition style it will let you know if it is MBR or GPT.

Here is an article on converting from MBR to GPT.

If it is GPT but is just shy of the full4 TB, read this.

  • I agree with LhkingVT. if your system and computer support GPT, it's better to use GPT disk. The conversion with Windows built in the tool will delete everything on your disk including recovery partition. You can use diskpart.exe or disk management to convert MBR to GPT, but you need to delete this disk to make it shown as unallocated space. therefore, you'd better backup the needed information before doing it. if you want to convert the system disk, you have to enable  UEFI before booting your computer. If you want to convert MBR to GPT without affecting the OS, you need to use third party software, such as AOMEI Partition Assistant. http://www.disk-partition.com/windows-10/convert-mbr-gpt-windows-10-0528.html
