Restore Files. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Everyone,

I have a database say DB1 having 2 data files and 1 log Files.

My objective is to restore a file of a DB1 using the backup ( Only that specified file will be backed up and restored to another database).

For that what I did ,

    1. backed up the file (say mdf)  using file and filegroup option.

    2. tried to restore the file in another database DB2, When I did this I got an error that File 2 was not backed up.

Please advise how to accomplish this task.

    Thanks in advance

    Regards,

    Ranjith Kumar

  • Hi Ranjith,

As per my knowledge to do so we would require that DB2 should be created from a full backup of DB1 and that you have the filegroup backup and all of the Transaction Log Backups from the full that created DB2 to bring the database and filegroup to a consistent state.

You can find Brent's Vedio to be more useful.

  • Hi Ranjith,

I hope you are restoring the database DB1 file backup on to the database DB2 where the database is different and its logical& physical structure will also be different. You can restore the DB1 file backup to DB1 database.
