Outlook causing high CPU usage RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi There,

I've recently purchased a new Surface Pro 4 and for some reason, not too sure when it started happening as I've only had the SP4 for about 2 days, when I run Outlook (2013 or 2016) my CPU utilization spikes up and the fan kicks in.

I've tried to run Outlook in safe mode (outlook.exe /safe) but this does not seem to help the issue.

Within a few minutes of launching outlook, the CPU starts to climb to about 65 - 85%. Outlook is using roughly 38 - 54% of the CPU.

    CPU: i5-6300U 2.4GHz

OS: Windows 10 (fully updated as of 23/11/2015)

    Outlook Version: 16.0.6001.103

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Bavo

  • Hi All,

I finally found the issue and it was related to the fact that we're using Gmail as our mail provider.
Gmail have an application called GoogleAppSync that runs in the background whenever outlook runs and ensures that your mail, calendars, contact and notes are all kept in sync.

It was the notes section of the AppSync tool that was causing the issues.
I managed to find a reg setting that disabled the notes sync and BANG!! CPU settled down and the fans shutdown!!

  • Hi,

Please check if Outlook is still downloading items, this may take some CPU usage. Once the downloading is finished, check if the CPU usage is still high.

What type of account do you use in Outlook?

If you have an Exchange Account, please check if it's working in Online Mode:

File -> Info -> Account Settings -> Account Settings -> Double click on the account name -> If "Use Cached Exchange Mode" is not ticked, Outlook is working in Online Mode. You can switch to Cached Mode to check if the problem persists.

You can also try disabling the troubleshooting logging:

File -> Options -> Advanced -> Untick "Enable troubleshooting logging (requires restarting Outlook)" -> OK.

  • Can you post where that Registry key is?

    Thanks.

  • Thanks Melon Chen

This solution got me in the ballpark.  I found that unchecking the 'Use animations when expanding conversation and groups' setting located right below the 'Enable troubleshooting...' option reduced my CPU usage from 18% to virtually 0% (when idle).

  • Hi,

What worked for me, reducing CPU of both Outlook and "Search Protocol Host" processes, was disabling the indexing of the Internet Calendar (I have used the guide in here: h**p://thegeekpage.com/fix-high-cpu-usage-due-to-searchprotocolhost-exe-in-windows-10/ ).
