Will FIM 2010 allow users to reset expired passwords from an external Portal website?

    Question

  • We are looking for a way to allow students to reset their expired passwords from a link on our Portal. Can we use FIMs self service portal password reset to achieve this? Many of these students do remember their expired passwords although some may not.

    Thanks

  • Will the students visit this portal from a machine which is joined to the domain? If they visit this portal from their personal machine, they can't use Self Service Password Reset.

Self Service Password Reset requies the Password Extension software to be installed on the client. Doesnt matter if you are using the ctrl-alt-del experience or if you visit the password reset portal.

  • Greg,

There probably are 3th party addons/standalone products which provide this functionality. I don't know of any examples though.

  • Thomas,

Thank you for your prompt reply. No the students that require the reset assitance are usually taking online classes from home on their personal computers. Can you recomend a way for them to reset their password that can be hyperlinked to from our portal. I know Quest has a solution but it was out of our price range last time I quoted it.

    Thanks,

    Greg

  • We have developed a custom password portal for that which allows regular password changes, including for expired accounts.  Password resets are then still covered by the QA gate.

  • Have you considered Courion, who have been in the space for 15 years:

  • I have also found another product from www.namescape.com called Mypassword that looks promising. Does anybody have any experience with this product?

  • Frank,

Is there any information available on how this custom password portal is developed? We have some in house development and may consider this option if it is not too involved.

    Thanks for yor help,

    Greg
